The William H. Helmke

Welcome Home Legacy

The Orchid at the Door

Some stories of service are written in history books. Others live quietly in the hearts of families.

SP5 William H. Helmke, born in Napoleon, Ohio, served in the U.S. Army Vietnam War with F Battery, 26th Artillery, at Dong Ha from April 22, 1968, through January 2, 1969. His specialty was Survey Artillery.

William returned home from a war where veterans were not always welcomed or appreciated. But he came home and made a life, he married his lovely wife, Barbara, and together they raised three children.

One of the most touching memories of his homecoming happened at his mother's front door.

After everything he had experienced, William surprised his mother by ringing the doorbell. When she opened the door, there stood her young son—home at last—with her favorite flower in his hand: an orchid.

No speech was necessary.

The orchid said everything: I'm home. I made it back. I love you.

That simple moment reminds us that behind every uniform is a son, daughter, husband, wife, parent, or friend. Veterans give so much of themselves, and sometimes the greatest way we can honor them is by simply making sure they know they are remembered.

In William's memory, we are giving back by donating two HVAC units per year, to veterans in need. These units will provide comfort to veterans who have sacrificed for our country—a small gesture inspired by a man who never forgot the people he loved.

William gave a part of his life in service to our nation. Now, in his memory, we hope to give something back to those who served.

REMEMBERED. APPRECIATED. NEVER FORGOTTEN.

Welcome Home.

How Veterans Are Selected

Veterans are nominated for The William H. Helmke Welcome Home Legacy through local veteran organizations and chapters. These organizations help us identify veterans in their communities who may benefit from a helping hand and the comfort of a new HVAC unit.

Veterans and their families can also submit a nomination through our online application form. Every story matters, and every nomination gives us an opportunity to learn about a veteran who has given so much in service to our country.

Our First Recipient

It is especially meaningful that the first recipient of The William H. Helmke Welcome Home Legacy is William’s beloved wife, Barbara “Barb” Helmke.

In William’s memory, we welcome Barb home with comfort, gratitude, and love.
